Pruning, however, is generally only done twice a year at most. This task is needed to remove dead, dying, or diseased branches that can weaken or kill a plant over time. For flowering shrubs, pruning will promote more numerous and fuller blooms. Pruning intensity and timing are based on the specific type of plant. Flowering shrubs are best pruned after it has finished blooming, while other plants do best when pruned in early or late winter.
